시선의 수리修理 이런 동네에서 살기 위해 우선 할일은 주변 시선에 대한 처리였다. 뒤와 옆은 그렇더라도 앞쪽방향은 심각했다. (앞집에서 본 이 집의 모습사진) 정면에 있는 5층짜리 다세대주택의 창문들을 불투명하게 처리하여 직접 보이는 안았지만 문제는 좌우측의 두 집이었다. “제가 빨래를 널다 이상해서 보면 저 집 2층에서 어떤 남자가 우리집을 빤히 바라보고 있는 거예요. 담배를 피면서요. 얼마나 놀랐는지……”
공간의 수리修理 이 집의 바깥공간은 아주 복잡했다.. 땅속에 묻힌 2개의 장독, 외부계단(평), 한쪽 팔만 펼쳐지는 빨래 건조대, 양쪽 팔을 모두 펼쳐지는 빨래 건조대, 라일락 나무와 단풍나무와 그 가지에 붙들어 맨 빨랫줄과 그곳에서 마르고 있는 빨래들, 딸의 작품인 누드조각상과 주석판으로 만든 십자가상과 힘을 주어 들어도 코도 들썩하지 않는 두 상자분량의 도자기 작품박스, 빗물로 채워진 항아리, 에어컨 실외기와 그 위에서 반쯤 열려진 공구박스, 수석, 펑키가 생산한 것으로 추정되는 강아지 똥. 군자란 화분, 국화화분, 행운목화분,오지화분,도기화분,자기화분들들들, 담장을 따라 심어진 나팔꽃, 주목, 벼락 맞은 감나무, 계단과 벽의 모서리에 있는 오래 묵은 모란, 국화,배롱나무,라일락나무,주목,석류나무,대문에 비스듬이 서있는 예배당식 장의자, 빗자루, 삽자루, 굉이자루가 있었다. 없는 것이 딱 하나 있다면 그것은 마당이었다. 우리는 바깥공간에서 있는 수납, 정원, 건조, 전시, 응접 등의 기능들을 분산할만한 외부공간을 확보하는 방법으로 널따란 목제 데크를 1층의 바닥의 높이에 만들면서 기존의 나무가 있던 곳은 일정한 크기로 절개하여 정원과 마당을 분리했고 도자기 등은 2층에 있는 자녀의 작업실과 연못가로 옮기는 식으로 외부공간을 수리修理했다.
쓸모의 수리修理 이 집이 38년 전의 시대에 적합하게 설계된 집이었다. 이 집을 구입한 동기중의 하나는 바깥주인의 7형제와 방의 개수가 같았기 때문이었지만 지금은 가족 수대로 4개의 방에다 가끔 오시는 부모님이 기거할 손님방 하나면 충분했다. 반면 살림이 늘자 창고는 더 필요했고, 대형냉장고와 김치 냉장고가 들어가기에는 부엌의 구조도 적합지 않았다. 삶LIFE CYCLE의 변화에 대하여 공간은 38년 전 그대로였던 것이다. 여기에 더하여 집이 어두웠다. 정남향의 집이었지만 집의 안쪽이 깊어 창문주면만 빼꼼 할 뿐 반대편은 어두웠다. 북쪽 방은 주차장 때문에 창문조차 열수가 없었다. 거기다가 앞집이 높게 짓는 바람에 창문마저 열지 못하는 상황이 온 것이다. 어둠의 포위를 풀기위해서는 집의 한복판까지 햇볕을 들어오게 할 는 방법을 찾아야 했다. 의외로 간단했다. 앞집의 영향을 받지 않고 햇볕이 잘 드는 곳은 찾아내어 그곳의 바닥을 크게 도려내자 1층의 안쪽까지 빛이 들어왔다. 38년 만에 직사광선을 초대한 것이다. 그렇게 되자 덩달아 바람도 잘 통했다. 에어컨 없이도 여름을 지낼 수 있었고 고 출근을 독촉하는 엄마의 소리도 2층까지 퍼졌다. 아들은 귀찮아졌지만.
JIP-SOORI of vision The first thing to be done to keep living in the neighborhood was to handle views from the surroundings. In particular, the house is laid open to view from the house in front. Two jar stands buried in the ground, outdoor stairs, a drying rack with only one wing folded out, a drying rack with both wings available, clotheslines tied between tree branches and drying laundry, a sculpture depicting a naked body which was a work of her daughter, a cross made of tin plate, two boxes full of ceramic works, jar stands filled with rainwater, outside air conditioner unit, a half-open tool box, viewing stones, dog feces, lily, chrysanthemum, good luck tree flowerpots, porcelain pots, morning glory planted along the fence, a persimmon tree, peony, chrysanthemums, a lilac tree, a pomegranate tree, a long bench leaning against the entrance, a broom and a shovel.
JIP-SOORI of Enhance Usability The clock of the house stopped 38 years ago. One of the reasons to purchase the house was said to be 7 rooms which fit the number of the brothers of her husband. But, the family no longer needs all the rooms. Now, four rooms for each family member, coupled with a guest room, are enough. On the other hand, the family needed more storage space as household goods increased. The structure of the kitchen was not proper for large appliances such as large refrigerators and kimchi refrigerators to be installed. Their lifestyle changed significantly, but their living spaces remained unchanged. In addition, the house was dark. Although the house faces the south, the sunlight couldn’t reach inner spaces of the house due to its structure. Moreover, she has never dared to open windows of a north-facing room because of a parking lot. Now, the situation worsened as the newly built house in front obstructs sunlight and wind from reaching her house. I had to find a solution to let the sunshine reach deeply inside. The answer was unexpectedly simple. After I found a sunny place which is not influenced by the house in front, I cut out a big chunk of the floor of the place, inviting sunlight to the deep inner parts of the house followed by the wind. Now, they can stay cool during summer without an air conditioner and Julia’s voice urging them to wake up in the morning is clearly heard from the second floor, although it may be cumbersome for the son.
